Bethany Powell

Bethany fulfilled a childhood dream by participating in the 2023 Hope’s Doorway mission trip to Zambia, Africa. It was her grandmother’s collection of National Geographic magazines that first awakened her passion for Africa at a very young age. Her intrigue for culture and language led her to pursue French. She graduated from Fort Lewis College with a double major and double minor in French, English Education, Political Science, and Linguistically Diverse Education. She studied French in Antibes and Chambéry, France, and she taught English in Bastia, Corsica. She graduated from New Mexico Highland University with a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management, and she has worked in secondary and higher education, combined, for 10 years. She is excited to attend the next Hope’s Doorway 2024 mission trip to Zambia. In her off time, she enjoys outdoor sports and recreation, exercise, maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle, spending time with her dogs, and investing in friendships and family.

Susan was part of Hope Doorway’s first team of volunteers to travel to Zambia. As a travel enthusiast who has a heart to advocate for vulnerable populations, she is honored to be part of the life changing work that Hope’s Doorway is doing to ensure access to education and health services. Susan’s professional background includes work with both local and international nonprofit organizations, as she is currently pursuing a degree in Humanitarian Leadership and Trauma Counseling. As a current Durango resident, you can find her outside any free moment she has hiking, camping or skiing!

April Phillips

As a nurse practitioner, I have dedicated my career to the provision of health services to underserved communities and vulnerable populations. As a National Health Service Corp ambassador, I collaborated closely with several members of Congress and former Gov. Susanna Martinez (NM) to increase the availability of mental health services in rural underserved communities. As a sponsor of several children, I have seen the incredible impact that Hope’s Doorway is having firsthand. I am truly honored to be a part of Hope’s Doorway and the amazing work that is being done to help children in rural Zambian communities.

Justine Maedeker

Justine Maedeker is joining the board of Hope’s Doorway after the child sponsorship program had piqued her interest in the organization. Justine’s professional interests include healthcare and health equity. She has primarily worked with older adult and mental health populations as a nurse practitioner. Hopes doorway has been a learning opportunity with respect to adolescent health and international education. In her free time, Justine enjoys volunteering, outdoor activities, public speaking with Toastmasters, reading, crafting/ crocheting, and travel.

Favorite quote: “Life everywhere is still life, life is in ourselves and not in the external. There will be people near me, and to be a human being among human beings, and to remain one forever, no matter what misfortunes befall, not to become depressed, and not to falter – this is what life is, herein lies its task.” – Dostoevsky
